The Barn Woonona

Modern Barn-Style Living in Woonona home

This is truly a unique project that embraces the natural challenges of its site. Built on a steep block in the Illawarra escarpment, this striking three-level home cantilevers each floor above the next, creating a dynamic design that works with the land.

The home's centrepiece—a kitchen benchtop integrated as a stair landing—serves as both a functional space and a conversation starter for visitors.

The Vision - A Modern Barn in the Trees

Homeowners John and Renee loved their location nestled in the trees but knew their old cottage needed an update. Inspired by modern barn-style architecture, they wanted a home that was different from the traditional builds in the area. Their vision included separate retreat spaces for parents and children, with a focus on creating a unique, contemporary home that blended with its natural surroundings.

Overcoming Site Challenges

The location posed several challenges, including its classification as a BAL40 bushfire zone and the presence of a natural spring running through the site. Careful planning and engineering were required to ensure the home was secure, with the structure "socketed" into the mountain. The cantilevered design also added complexity, as each level needed to extend over the one below while maintaining stability.

Additionally, adjustable stumps were incorporated to relevel the home if needed, while flexible exterior cladding materials were used to meet bushfire safety regulations.

The Process - Complex Engineering and Creative Design

The home was designed with three full levels, each cantilevering out above the next. The top floor serves as a private parents' retreat, the middle floor as the main living area, and the lower level as a dedicated space for the kids. This layout allows for a seamless indoor-outdoor flow, with the main living area opening onto a spacious outdoor entertaining space.

The Result - A Stunning Woonona Home

The final result is a one-of-a-kind home that exceeds the owners' expectations. The cantilevered design, bushfire-safe materials and innovative use of space make this home both beautiful and practical.

We were delighted with the constant updates and transparency. Throughout the build phase we would view the progress and on some occasions with family and friends and all who toured the home were amazed at the attention to detail and quality of the construction. The site was always clean and tidy which is a testament to their drive toward perfection. The home has exceeded our expectations and we now call Keiron a friend
