This stunning renovation of a coastal cottage was designed to meet the needs of multi-generational living. Located on a steep, narrow block, the home was expanded upwards, preserving the original charm while creating a functional second level. This thoughtful design maximises the home's proximity to the water, capturing beautiful coastal views.
The Vision - Expanding for Multi-Generation Living
David and Caroline wanted to expand their cottage to accommodate Caroline’s mother, ensuring her independence while keeping her close. Their vision was a spacious home that retained the coastal feel, with private spaces for each family member within a connected, multi-generational layout.
Overcoming Site Challenges
The steep block and nearby railway meant we couldn’t extend outward, so the solution was to build up. The second floor was designed to fit within the existing structure's style. Careful planning incorporated a stair lift and wider spaces for accessibility, ensuring the upper level could function as a safe, adaptable space for Caroline’s mother.
The Process - Build Upwards for Family Living
A second storey was added to create a five-bedroom, three-bathroom home designed for multi-generational living. The new upper level provides an independent area for Caroline’s mother, while the lower levels offer connected family spaces.
The Result - A Functional Multi-Generation Home
The result is a beautifully reimagined coastal home, designed both for privacy and connection. With its smart design, this renovation delivers the perfect balance for multi-generational family life in a beautiful coastal setting.
